The Class of 2017 is about to graduate with 118 seniors. Some students are going to Jackson State Community College, University of Memphis, and University of Tennessee-Knoxville. There are a few who are going out of state including Florida State University and Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. With the average out of state university costing around 36,000 per year including room and board, it makes people wonder if it is even worth going to an out of state university.

The average in-state university is around 20k per year and that is still relatively expensive for some families to cover. I had the chance to interview senior Rachel Woeltje who wanted to go out of state but is going to go to MTSU instead. ” Throughout my whole life, I wanted to attend New York University to study Fashion Design, but why pay 60k per year when I can get just as good a degree from Middle Tennessee State University. I will have a better chance of becoming a successful fashion designer when I move to New York with little to no debt.”

The average student graduates 40k in debt and that is still a lot of debt to have to repay. If an average student attends an out of state university, they could graduate over 100k in debt. Students should look at cost carefully and compare degrees from different universities to see if it is worth it  to go into debt for the same value of the degree.
