On March 29th, many students chose to donate blood for the semi-annual Blood Drive at Madison Academic. Everyone focuses on the fact that students need to donate,  but what about the teachers of our school? When interviewed, most of the senior teachers at Madison had different yet similar answers. AP English teacher Coach Clark said that he wasn’t going to donate because he went overseas in the last few years and could not donate due to his travels. Some teachers simply did not want to give blood. US Government teacher, Mrs. Tyler said, “I just do not like needles, so that is why I am not giving my blood away today.” Biology teacher Mr. Balcunas said that even though he isn’t donating today, he is a frequent donor. However, he did mention that he has had a previous bad experience of “pretty bad bruising” that caused him to refrain from giving blood for a while.

Many students donate blood to receive benefits. If you successfully donate blood three times during your high school career, you receive a red chord, courtesy of the Lifeline Blood Center. Other advantages include the fact that they can get paid for donating, but not through Lifeline. However, most students enjoy helping save lives and being a productive member of society. Students who opt to receive text messages after giving blood have the chance to see how their blood is being used in West Tennessee. By knowing where and when their blood is being used, students become even more motivated to become continual donors.

Overall, the blood drive was a success yet again. Madison students have always been eager to give, and this time was no exception.
