First round of the districts tournament started for the Mustangs on Thursday, February 16. The Mustangs were up against Adamsville High School, an opponent which they beat twice during the regular season, so the odds were favored for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs and Cardinals battled throughout the whole first half. The game was played as a tug-a-war with both teams pulling with their all to build up a steady lead. The Cardinals pulled with a 27 to 14 lead, but the Mustangs wouldn’t go into halftime without a fight. Shooting guard McCarty Maxwell, had two fast breaks shooting back to back three point shots going into halftime. Going into halftime the Mustangs were down 7, but ready to come back out and battle.
The third quarter started with the Mustangs working the basketball court to make a comeback. The boys competed in the second half, but the Mustangs stayed in foul trouble, sending the Cardinals to the free throw line. During the fourth, the Mustangs were down to the wire with 5 minutes left in the fourth and only down by 5. In the end, the Mustangs came scoring 27 points in the 4th quarter, but still came up short. The final score was 60 Adamsville to 53 Madison.
Our Mustangs ended the districts on a sad note, hoping to go further in the tournament. “I hoped that we went further in the tournament this year, but I’m glad with how our season turned out overall,” said Senior Jody Kinnes.
