“Leaders aren’t born, they are made,” said Vince Lombardi, former football coach of the Green Bay Packers. Whether swinging a golf club, dribbling a basketball, or spiking a volleyball to the hardwood floor, this is a good motto to live by.
Sydney Chung, a junior golf player at Madison, has been actively involved in golfing since his freshman year of high school. In the summer of 2011, he participated in 11 individual events, and this recent season, he took part in 14 9-hole matches, and 5 tournaments including the Harden County tournament and the FCA Invitational. Chung said, “I was very upset with the way I played and feel there is a lot of room for improvement next season.”
Chandler Pittman, a senior and starting center for the Madison Mustangs basketball team, has had a positive impact on his team this year. Now at the end of the regular season, Pittman discussed how he felt about going into district and what his view was on the way the season ended. He stated, “We’ve got a lot of positives along with a little frustration, but we’ve come a long way. As for district, I’m pretty confident in our abilities.”
Zanah Kent, a senior volleyball player at the middle position for Madison Academic, has an upright attitude about the way the season ended. Kent said, “I believe that we have done better than any previous team because we made it a lot further.” Kent also stated that her passing game along with her leadership skills improved the most during the season. Madison, sitting at number 13 in the state with a record of 29-16, has certainly had a great year.
Whether the year ended on a positive note or a negative, these players showed great sportsmanship throughout their seasons. Despite what may have been an unfortunate mishap as either an individual or as a team as a whole, there are definitely lessons to take away from these experiences.
