On Friday, May 4 2012, Mrs. Phillips took her junior, advanced placement U.S. History class to the Carnegie Center in downtown Jackson. During the trip, the students were able to explore different aspects of the museum.

The presentation from the tour guide and the way students mingled gave off a positive atmosphere during the trip. Kelsey Hosford, talked about her favorite part. “I really enjoyed the children’s art museum,” said Kelsey. Classmate Dylan Pittman later stated “I liked Island number ten and Mr. Herpert Alexander, (Morgan Cowles grandfather’s) presentation of it.” James Head said he liked the paintings because they had a “vivid appearance”.

Due in part to how well the students participated and the enthusiasm of the tour guide, the trip turned out to be a huge success. Mrs. Phillips was able to stay calm and ended the day the same way she started it. All the students made it to the Carnegie and all the students made it back, and that’s success in itself.

Here at Madison, each student must pass Wellness and Physical Education. The young men who are enrolled in these courses must go through Coach Maurice Brooks, the boys Wellness and P.E. teacher. Not only does he teach, but Coach Brooks is also the assistant basketball and track coach.

Coach Brooks is a native of Jackson, Tennessee and a product of the Jackson-Madison County School System. He enrolled in Jackson Central Merry High School his freshman year, where he remained until the end of his junior year. He then completed his high school education across town at North Side High School.

In high school, Brooks was very active in sports. He was a member of the football, basketball, baseball, and soccer teams.

After high school, Coach Brooks attended Jackson State Community College and the University of Tennessee at Martin. He pursued his lifetime goal when he majored in Health and Physical Education. “I always knew I wanted to have a career relating to Health, but I didn’t know exactly what field I wanted to pursue” stated Coach Brooks.

His hobbies include working out, and watching and playing various sports. When Coach Brooks has free time, he enjoys spending it with his son, Jordan, and other family members.
Starting off, the dugout was in disarray. Therefore, recently the dugout crew: Grace Howell, Adaja, Katie Donavant, Black Monroe, and Gisela Acosta, organized the clothes on shelves and hangers by size.

Congratulations to Ms. Fly’s theatre III honors group on their performance of Juvie. In this touching play, the audience is shown the emotions and logic behind teenage reasoning through their phase of rebellion. Set in an imaginary courthouse/jail setting, the audience feeds off the actors to build the scene themselves. “I thought the play was very well done, Ms. Fly had a wonderful cast and crew to deliver this amazing production,” stated Sydney Chung, a rising senior. West Middle School students also attended this Becky Fly performance. With tentative ears and watchful eyes, they had a firsthand experience of Madison’s extraordinary theater program. Kathelene White commented on the West Middle students, “They were surprisingly calm for their age; they showed a lot of respect for the actors on stage.” The cast and crew worked very well together to put on a marvelous show, and took care of a business.
